ABOUT DOUG

The majority of my professional career has been devoted to working with people with disabilities, primarily in K-12 special education. I have been fortunate to have sampled a wide variety of related jobs, such as adaptation specialist, resource teacher supporting college students with disabilities, special education teacher, adapted physical education teacher, work experience coordinator, paraeducator trainer, and crisis intervention trainer (Mandt). In addition, I’ve been a recreation director and a college volleyball coach.

Teaching at Kirkwood Community College is a thrill for me! The college in general is widely recognized as one of the most progressive community colleges in the country, and our Education Careers and Disabilities Services Careers programs, the two programs in which I teach, are highly respected for producing students who are well-prepared to enter these careers. And while this next statement may sound corny, I sincerely believe it. Having the opportunity to come to class each day, meeting with and preparing motivated and caring future educators and service providers, is truly a great honor.

My wife Mary Kay and I have two sons, Jake and Adam. Mary Kay teaches at Kirkwood as an adjunct instructor and volunteers extensively at our boys’ schools and at the YMCA. She and I coached the Mount Mercy College and Kirkwood volleyball teams together and have conducted nearly 200 volleyball camps throughout the state over the years. Jake and Adam enjoy sports, and I have been a volunteer coach for several of their teams. Our family loves to read, play cards, camp, canoe, golf, and play tennis and other sports together.

My interests include spending time with my family, golf, politics, gardening and landscaping, home repairs, and outdoor activities and sports.

Looking forward to seeing you in class!
