Social Problems

This course takes a sociological perspective on the definition and causes of social problems. As such it examines social problems in the context of the local communities and larger society in which they occur. Successful students in this course will demonstrate an understanding of the possible cultural and structural underpinnings of social problems as well as major theoretical perspectives on them. Students will also demonstrate command of facts surrounding social problems—including knowledge of actual or proposed policies aimed at correcting them—and critical thinking abilities relative to these facts. Finally, this course seeks to develop in students the ability to articulate sociological awareness and understanding of topics both verbally and in writing and to do so in a respectful, socially responsible way.
