Do you want to be a math major?

Kirkwood does offer a considerable number of math classes and some will be helpful for majoring in mathematics.  The biggest hurdle for starting a math major at Kirkwood is where you get initially placed in the math sequence and getting good advice about classes.  If you place below college level mathematics either through a placement test score or an ACT score, then you will have to work hard to be a math major.  If you get placed at the Precalculus level, then you should try to get through the calculus sequence before leaving Kirkwood.  Here is the sequence of classes that you might take:

1) Precalculus I and Precalculus II  (OR Accelerated Precalculus)

2) Calculus I, Calculus II

3) Calculus III

4) Differential Equations and/or Linear algebra.

Notes:

1. Linear Algebra can be taken after one semester of calculus.

2. Also, students could benefit from taking Fundamentals of Statistics.  Fundamentals of Statistics is not usually part of a math major, but you might find that statistics is interesting to you and might want to take more statistics classes later in your math major.
