Course Requirements & Evaluation

What You'll Do in this Course:
This course is intended to take the student into a deeper study of ASL grammar in order to become a successful communicator in ASL.

***** Assignments will not be accepted after the test over that material!!!

Green Book

  • Read chapters 1 – 5 for information concerning ASL and the Deaf Community. This information may appear on a written final.
  • Read each chapter and then practice the dialogues (3) which accompany each chapter beginning with chapter 6 – 13.
Signing Naturally III
  • Chapters 18-20 (the rest of the chapters will be studied in ASL IV).
Course 2001
  • Sentences video taped for points.

Course 2001: Instructional Guide – even though it is not possible to follow the Green Book exactly, every effort has been made to align the two curriculums. Please be sure to carefully notice the page numbers for the chapter to study for that week. We will jump around a bit. Each chapter contains sentences which you will convert to ASL. You are to videotape the Activity Sentences on that page and hand in the videotape on the due date. Each module is to help you prepare for the activity in order to do your best. It is important that you complete the other pages. The videotaped sentences are worth ½ point per sentence. That averages to about 5 points per module. There are 10 modules. Total points possible: 50 points.

Personal Story – Student is to make up a story and videotape it. Then, the student will present the story in class. The evaluation form is the last page of this handbook. Total Points possible: 40 points.

Cartoon – Each student will bring a cartoon from the newspaper, magazine or journal to class. Each will sign the cartoon for the class as well as putting the cartoon on videotape to hand in the day it is due. BE CAREFUL!! The cartoon must present Deaf humor. What is funny to hearing people is not always funny to the Deaf because hearing people enjoy a "play on words." The Deaf enjoy a situation which is visually funny, or pokes fun at the hearing world. The evaluation form on the last page will be used for grading. Total points possible: 40 points.

Performance Final – Each student will be given a story which they are to sign for the final on a videotape to be handed in on the due date.  Total points possible: 40 points.
