Course Competencies & Objectives:

By the end of Introduction to Interpreting, students will be able to:

  1. Use Code of Ethics from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  2. Explain the process of certification
  3. State history of interpreting
  4. Cite legislation which mandates interpreters
  5. Explain trends in fees
  6. Evaluate malpractice exposure in interpreting situations
  7. Determine personal pros and cons of interpreting as a profession
  8. Assess the future of interpreting
  9. Identify factors which interpreters bring to each situation
  10. Identify factors which deaf participants may bring to the interpreting situation
  11. Identify factors which non-deaf participants may bring to the interpreting situation
  12. Explain influence of Hearing and Deaf languages and cultures as it impacts interpreting
  13. Differentiate interpreter’s linguistic tools
  14. Define and analyze various interpreting models:
  15. Identify needs in a variety of community settings
  16. Explain the interpreter’s role in Educational settings
