    3. Sociolinguistics: Jankowski, K. "Empowerment from within: The Deaf Social Movement Providing a Framework for a Multicultural Society" (p. 307-327).
    4. Academic Acceptance of American Sign Language. Rutherford, S. "The Culture of American Deaf People" (p.21-38).
    5. The Deaf Way: Choose one article about Deaf culture in another country. This oral report will be given in class.  Student will hand in an outline to the Instructor.

Do not use your voice for 24 hours. Pretend to be deaf, but tell people you are pretending! (It is culturally unacceptable for hearing people to pass themselves off as Deaf.) You may want to warn your roommates, family, etc. beforehand. It should be interesting to see how they react.

Do something! Don’t just hide from people and watch TV with the sound turned down; get out and interact with people--try to interact with your friends, go to school, or go to work, but most of all, do something. Most importantly, think about it. Think about the way people react to you and the way you respond to them. Try to see if you can’t peek out of the shell that is you and see things from a different perspective.

When you complete your Deaf Day, type a short page telling me two things:

Disclaimer: In the past I have recommended that students wear earplugs during their Deaf Days, but because of liability concerns, I no longer make this recommendation. I accept no responsibility for any negative consequences resulting from the use of earplugs.
